This volume contains 82 papers originally presented at the International Conference on Tree-Rings, Environment and Humanity: Processes and Relationships, in May 1994. Broadly interdisciplinary in scope, the conference papers are divided into eight major topics:
Contributions reflect the international scope of the discipline, with studies representing nearly every geographical area where dendrochronology has been applied. Historical papers examine topics such as medieval church construction, British Tudor shipbuilding, analysis of art works, and comparative Navajo and Pueblo wood use. The environmental theme of the conference is reflected in numerous papers using dendrochronological techniques to reconstruct past climates, to identify local disruptions such as fires, volcanoes and hurricanes, to examine the environmental impact of logging, wastewater, nuclear plant emissions and industrial pollution.
From the editors' preface:
The final product of the International Conference on Tree Rings, Environment and Humanity, this volume, accurately portrays the status of dendrochronology at the end of the 20th century. Since its inception at the beginning of the century, dendrochronology has been transformed from a parochial curiosity of limited interest but great potential into a science of great topical diversity and geographic scope. It has emerged as an important monitor of the state of the planet and of humankind's impact on the globe's physical, biological and cultural systems. The included papers capture the flavor and excitement of a rapidly expanding discipline in which new applications are being developed and new areas are being opened up to research.
